4 Common Hypnosis Myths That You Need To Know About!

If you've ever seen hypnosis as entertainment in a stage show, then you've probably witnessed several of the 4 Common Hypnosis Myths in action. Clinical hypnotherapy as practiced by a certified professional is NOT the same as what is performed on stage. To clarify what hypnosis as a therapy is really about, we have created a list of the 4 Most Common Hypnosis Myths and revealed the truth behind every one of them.

  1. Myth: When under hypnosis, you give up your free will.

Reality: Hypnosis is simply a state of heightened concentration and focused attention. When under hypnosis, you do not lose your personality, your values or your free will.
  2. Myth: When under hypnosis, the hypnotist controls you.

Reality: No one can control you, but you. Hypnosis is a voluntary process. A hypnotherapist only serves as a knowledgeable and experienced guide throughout your hypnosis session.
  3. Myth: When under hypnosis, you lose consciousness and experience amnesia.

Reality: A small number of people who go into very deep hypnotic states experience temporary amnesia. Most people, however, remember everything that occurred immediately after their session. Those who don't, recall the memory of the session a short while later.
  4. Myth: You can be put under hypnosis without your permission.

Reality: Successful hypnosis depends on your willingness to experience the hypnotic state voluntarily. Without your permission, it is virtually impossible for you to be guided into hypnosis.
